Happy Christmas no sorry Season’s Greetings oops wrong again Happy Hanukkah. Oh why are we suddenly forced to forget the Christian heritage of this country. Tomorrow is the celebration of the birth of Christ – it is not a general time for people to celebrate being.
Now I may be slightly biased to all of this but I have been really pissed off with everyone who is trying to remove all references to the celebrations that we are about to enjoy. I will admit that the true spirit of the coming days has been lost and forgotten in recent years but that shouldn’t mean that we become a completely secular, non-religious day where we eat some meat (or Quorn for you vegetarians), drink some wine, exchange presents and that’s it.
I don’t class myself as a practising Christian but you don’t need to be in order to understand where the significance of tomorrow comes from. I usually end up going to church tonight for Midnight Mass at St John’s in Leatherhead but this year we have decided that it isn’t how we would like to celebrate Christmas. I am sure that I will have the option to go to a service, should I wish, on Christmas day. Although the family service is possibly the most annoying of them all with crying babies… Bah Humbug!
I think that we will also find that those politicians who have said that we should be more generic to avoid the other religions from feeling “left-out” will be going to church themselves which makes a mockery of the whole idea anyway.
We shouldn’t stop each religion from celebrating their own festive days in their own way. This country is multi-national/cultural/faith but our country has been built on a base of Christianity and should be respected.
